IHS Staff Member Announces Release of New Book

FEBRUARY 2010 - Betsy Keefer Smalley, IHS Adoption and Foster Care Program Manager, has co-authored another book on adoption, titled Wounded Children, Healing Homes:  How Traumatized Children Impact Adoptive and Foster Families.   Her co-authors are Jayne Schooler, an IHS trainer and consultant, and Timothy J. Callahan, a clinical psychologist.  The book addresses the challenges faced by families whose adopted children have histories of serious trauma.  The book is a pragmatic resource that answers questions and provides strategies to help children heal and to preserve placement stability.  Wounded Children, Healing Homes was published by NavPress and is available at Amazon.com.


Presentation of the 2010 Pro Humanitate Awards

JANUARY 2010 - The 2010 Pro Humanitate Awards were presented on January 28, 2010 at the 24th Annual San Diego International Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment in San Diego, CA.  Awards were presented by Ronald C. National Adoption Day: Ukraine

SEPTEMBER 2009 - On September 29th, 2009, a press conference sponsored by Holt International’s Ukraine office was held in Kiev to celebrate National Adoption Day.  Speakers included Ukraine’s Minister of Family, Youth and Sport; the Ministry’s Director of Adoptions; two Ukrainian adoptive families; Ruslan Malyuta, Vice President of Father’s House, a Ukraine-based international charity; Ruby Johnston, President and a co-founder of the International Leadership and Development Center (ILDC); Institute for Human Services (IHS) representatives Betsy Keefer and Jayne Schooler; and representatives from other local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working to promote adoption in Ukraine.

Field Guide to Child Welfare Now Available in Russian

IHS recently completed a two-year project to translate the Field Guide to Child Welfare, our four-volume child welfare resource textbook, into Russian. 

Co-authored by IHS Directors Judith S. Rycus and Ronald C. Hughes, the Field Guide covers the fundamental and essential competencies for child welfare practice.  The book was published in English by the Child Welfare League of America, and was later translated into French for use in Canada’s bilingual provinces.'

Child Welfare Training and System Development in Eastern Europe

As a result of the break-up of the former Soviet Union, hundreds of thousands of children and youth in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and other post-Soviet Nations are being cared for in large state-run institutions, or are homeless and living on the streets. IHS has been involved in helping to build professional and organizational capacity in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan to serve these children and youth since 2004.
