Supporting ParentsPTSD (2).png

This training explores the effect on children when their parents have a mental health diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Course Overview

When parents suffer from mental illness, the entire family is impacted. This training explores the effect on children when their parents have a mental health diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Participants will also engage in an exercise to help them have greater empathy for parents suffering from PTSD. This training offers practical recommendations on how to facilitate support and change for parents who may struggle with their symptoms. Participants will also develop informal action plans to assist them in their own professional work with families.

This intermediate level training is designed to support caseworkers, social workers, counselors, psychologists, and other helping professionals who are working alongside families impacted by parental PTSD. This informative session will include didactic lecture, as well as group interaction, personal reflection, and a time for Q & A.

"This course material helped me significantly. I am a foster mom to a little boy and his mom and his mom suffer from severe PTSD. I also suffer from PTSD but respond so much differently. Thank you for helping me to see again that PTSD doesn't look the same for everyone. We did more of a personal reflection than role-playing or group activities since it is such a sensitive subject. I have started to develop a plan and am hoping to implement it in my home in the very near future with assistance and guidance in reevaluating my plan from my case worker and my foster daughter. "

Amber S.

Describe at least 5 key effects PTSD may have on a parent's ability to parent.

Identify at least 3 core strategies to work more effectively with families impacted by parental PTSD.

Develop action plans to assist them in their work with families impacted by parental PTSD.

Together Again
