Summer Wellness Series Part 12 - Environmental Well-Being

Embracing Environmental Wellbeing: Enhance Your Space, Enhance Your Life

In this week’s installment of our Summer Wellness Series, we’ll be focusing on environmental well-being. For me, environmental well-being is not just about the outdoors—it encompasses our immediate surroundings and how they impact our daily lives, from our mood and productivity to our overall health. Environmental well-being involves living in harmony with the earth by understanding the impact of your interaction with nature and your personal environment. This includes ensuring that your surroundings, both at home and in your community, are safe, sustainable, and conducive to overall health and well-being. It also means taking steps to protect and preserve the planet for future generations (Hawkins, 2019). Research consistently highlights the profound influence of our environment on our wellbeing (Hartig et al., 2014; Kaplan, 1995).

Here’s how you can cultivate a supportive and sustainable environment to enhance your well-being:

  • Explore "Green" Products: Start by incorporating eco-friendly alternatives into your home and garden. Choosing products that are sustainably sourced and produced can reduce your environmental footprint and promote a healthier living environment.

  • Declutter and Minimize: A clutter-free space promotes mental clarity and reduces stress. Take time to declutter your living spaces, donate items you no longer need, and organize your belongings in a way that enhances functionality and spaciousness.

  • Create a Positive Atmosphere: Enhance your daily routines by playing uplifting music while doing household chores or engaging in activities. Music has been shown to positively affect mood and motivation, creating a more enjoyable and productive atmosphere at home.

  • Upcycle and Recycle: Tap into creative ways to repurpose and recycle items you already have. Websites dedicated to upcycling offer numerous ideas to transform everyday objects into new and useful creations, fostering creativity and sustainability.

Barriers to Achieving Environmental Well-Being

  • Lack of Awareness and Education: Many people are not fully aware of how their actions affect the environment or the benefits of living sustainably.

  • Economic Constraints: Sustainable products and eco-friendly solutions can sometimes be more expensive, making it difficult for individuals to make environmentally friendly choices.

  • Limited Access to Resources: Not everyone has access to recycling facilities, green spaces, or sustainable products, especially in underserved or urban areas.

  • Behavioral Habits: Long-standing habits and lifestyles can be hard to change, even when individuals are aware of the environmental impact.

  • Policy and Infrastructure: Inadequate policies and infrastructure can hinder efforts to promote environmental well-being, such as the lack of public transportation options or insufficient support for renewable energy.

Nurturing Wellbeing: A Path to Personal and Planetary Health

Personally, maintaining a tidy workspace and surroundings significantly enhances my productivity and mental clarity. Consider your immediate environment as the first layer of your well-being journey. How can you arrange your living spaces to better support your goals? Organize your workspace to minimize distractions and foster focus. Arrange your kitchen and dining areas to promote healthier eating habits and facilitate regular exercise. If you have a garden, transform it into a source of joy and relaxation.

Beyond personal spaces, think about our collective environment. Small actions like recycling more, reducing water usage, or switching to eco-friendly products can contribute positively to our planet's health. Research shows that even modest changes in individual behavior can have significant cumulative effects on environmental sustainability (Steg et al., 2015).

Let's start making a difference today with these practical tips to enhance both our personal environments and our planet. Together, we can create spaces that nurture wellbeing and contribute to a healthier world.
