Pastors Sara Vargas and Rodrigo Rangel, Co-Founders and Directors of Pontes de Amor in Uberlandia, Brazil asked the Institute for Human Services to recommend an adoption expert to present at their 2019 Global Forum – A World Without Orphans. Dr. Judith Rycus recommended retired IHS staff member, author and consultant, Betsy Keefer Smalley. Ms. Smalley accepted the invitation and traveled to Brazil to train and consult with Pontes de Amor, a nonprofit organization that prepares and supports adoptive families, works for the development of the Orphan and Vulnerable Children, and offers professional training.
In April of 2020, Ruby Johnston of Lamb International, an IHS partner organization, along with Ms. Smalley and Dr. Rycus, participated in a 5-day, online study tour that was originally scheduled to take place at IHS headquarters in Columbus, Ohio before Covid-19.
As a result of these two meetings, Ms. Smalley was asked to present at #enapaonline2020 in May in Brazil. Once again, the conference was moved to an online format. Her two, one-hour workshops and two, three-hour workshops on #adoption were well received. Ms. Smalley also presented two, one-hour virtual workshops in May 2020 for Angaad, a Brazilian adoptive family support organization.
